Household junk removal in DC, Maryland & Virginia

The rooms this usually happens in
Household junk almost never accumulates evenly. It collects in the four places nobody has to walk through every day, and it is worth knowing what makes each of them awkward before you book anyone.
The garage
Usually the fastest job in the house, because everything can go straight out through a wide door with no corners. Also the one most likely to contain paint, fuel and old propane tanks, which we cannot take — pull those aside first.
The basement
Below-grade means carrying everything up. Older DC and inner-Maryland houses often have a narrow dog-leg staircase, which is why a sectional that went down in one piece has to come up in three.
The attic
Pull-down ladders are rated for a person, not a person plus a filing cabinet. Attic jobs are slower and need two sets of hands, and that is worth saying at quote time rather than on the day.
The shed
Often the shed itself is the junk. If it needs dismantling before it can be carried out, say so — it changes the time, not usually the difficulty.
The spare room
The nursery-turned-storage-room. Mostly light, mostly boxes, and mostly a question of how much you want to open before it goes.
The yard
Brush, storm debris, an old swing set, a hot tub that has not held water since 2019. Curbside is easy; behind a locked gate needs planning.
Why your county matters more than you would think
Households in this region can dispose of a surprising amount themselves, for free or close to it — and the limits are exactly where people get caught out. Two examples from the two biggest Maryland counties we work in:
- Prince George’s County allows residents one non-commercial pickup or trailer load of construction and demolition material per year
- Its convenience centers turn away trailers and commercial-looking vehicles outright, so a friend’s work van is not a shortcut
- PG residents can drop a maximum of five scrap tires up to 17″ per year; beyond that you need a Tire Hauler’s License
- Montgomery County’s Shady Grove Transfer Station will not take shingles or roofing material of any kind, or car parts
- Shady Grove also refuses Sunday loads over 500 lb

There is no minimum you have to hit
A single mattress out of a third-floor walk-up is a real job and gets quoted like one. So does an entire garage. What we will not do is pretend a small job is a big one to make the trip worthwhile — if it is cheaper for you to put it out on a county bulk collection, that is the answer you will get.
